Getting Around Los Angeles
Complete guide to LA transportation options including driving, Metro, rideshare, and more. Learn how to navigate Los Angeles like a local.
Driving in LA
Driving is the most common way to get around LA, but it comes with challenges. Traffic can add 30-60+ minutes to any drive during rush hours. Major freeways (101, 405, 10, 5) are parking lots during peak times. Use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps — they're essential for avoiding traffic. Parking costs $5-50 depending on location and time.
Rental Cars
Renting a car gives you maximum flexibility but isn't always necessary. If you're staying in one walkable area (like Santa Monica), you might not need one. LAX has all major rental companies. Book in advance for better rates. Consider toll roads (use FasTrak or pay online within 5 days). Gas prices in LA are among the highest in the nation.
Metro Rail & Bus
LA's Metro has expanded significantly. The B/D Lines connect Hollywood to Downtown. The E Line runs from Downtown to Santa Monica. The C/K Lines serve LAX and South Bay. A single ride is $1.75 (use TAP card). The Metro is clean and safe during peak hours. However, it doesn't reach many neighborhoods, limiting its utility for tourists.
Uber, Lyft & Rideshare
Rideshare is extremely popular in LA. It's often the best option for nights out (no parking hassles or drink driving). Expect $15-40 for typical rides within the city. Surge pricing during events and late nights can triple prices. LAX has dedicated rideshare pickup areas. Wait times are usually under 10 minutes.
Bikes, Scooters & E-Bikes
Beach areas are perfect for biking. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail runs 22 miles from Pacific Palisades to Torrance. Rental bikes and e-scooters (Bird, Lime, Wheels) are available in many areas. Downtown LA and Silver Lake are becoming more bike-friendly. Always wear a helmet — it's the law for under-18 and recommended for all.
LAX to LA
Getting from LAX to your destination takes 30-90 minutes depending on traffic and location. Options: FlyAway bus ($9.75) to Union Station or other hubs, Metro C Line (after short shuttle), rideshare ($30-60), rental car, or hotel shuttles. Avoid arriving/departing during rush hour if possible.
