LA Beaches Guide

Explore LA's beautiful beaches from Malibu to Long Beach. Find the perfect beach for surfing, swimming, families, or relaxation.

Beach Overview

LA County has 75 miles of coastline with beaches for every taste. The water is cold (55-68°F) — locals wear wetsuits for surfing. Water quality is tested daily; avoid swimming after rain. Peak beach season is July-October when "June Gloom" clears. All beaches are public — there are no private beaches in California.

Santa Monica Beach

The most iconic LA beach, stretching 3.5 miles. Features the famous Santa Monica Pier with its Ferris wheel. Wide sandy beach, volleyball courts, and the Muscle Beach gym. Very crowded in summer. Paid parking available. Great for families and first-time visitors wanting the classic LA experience.

Venice Beach

The eclectic, bohemian beach with the famous boardwalk. Street performers, vendors, Muscle Beach outdoor gym, skate park, and murals. More of a scene than a relaxation spot. Great people-watching. The Canals area offers a peaceful escape. Parking is challenging — arrive early.

Malibu Beaches

Malibu's 27 miles of coastline offer LA's most beautiful beaches. Zuma Beach: wide, family-friendly. Point Dume: dramatic cliffs, whale watching. El Matador: stunning rock formations (Instagram favorite). Surfrider Beach: legendary surfing. Parking is limited and expensive. Worth the drive for a special day.

South Bay Beaches

Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach offer a more local vibe. Cleaner, less crowded, family-oriented. The Strand bike path connects all three. Manhattan Beach has upscale dining. Hermosa is known for nightlife. Great alternative to the Westside beaches.

Beach Tips

Bring layers — mornings can be cool even in summer. Parking fills up by 10am on weekends. Sunscreen is essential — LA sun is intense. Pack out all trash. Alcohol is prohibited on all LA beaches. Fire pits at Dockweiler Beach are popular — arrive early on weekends.
