Venice Beach Guide
Complete guide to Venice Beach. Explore the famous boardwalk, beautiful canals, Abbot Kinney Blvd, and the eclectic culture of LA's hippest beach town.
Venice Vibes
Venice Beach is LA at its most eccentric. Founded in 1905 as a seaside resort with canals modeled after Venice, Italy, it became a bohemian haven in the 60s. Today it's a mix of Silicon Beach tech workers, longtime artists, homeless encampments, and tourists. It's gritty, creative, and completely unique.
The Boardwalk
The Venice Beach Boardwalk is a two-mile carnival of humanity. Street performers, bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, skaters at the legendary skate park, murals, vendors, and endless people-watching. It's chaotic and not for everyone, but it's an essential LA experience. Go on a weekend afternoon for maximum energy.
Venice Canals
Just blocks from the boardwalk chaos, the Venice Canals are surprisingly peaceful. Charming homes line waterways crossed by arched bridges. It's Instagram-perfect and great for a morning walk. Entry is free; respect that people live here. The canals feel like a secret hiding in plain sight.
Abbot Kinney Blvd
Named after Venice's founder, this mile-long street is one of LA's best shopping and dining strips. Boutiques (Aviator Nation, Burro), restaurants (Gjelina, Gjusta, Felix), and cafés (Blue Bottle) line the street. First Fridays bring food trucks and extended hours. Parking is brutal; come early or rideshare.
Where to Eat
Gjelina — the restaurant that started Abbot Kinney's rise, still excellent. Gjusta — bakery/deli from same team, incredible takeaway. Felix — Roman-style pasta, beautiful space. The Butcher's Daughter — plant-based café. Tacos Tu Madre — casual Mexican. Rose Café — classic Venice since 1979.
Getting Around
Venice is bikeable — rent from Breeze Bike Share. The beach path connects to Santa Monica (3 miles north). Street parking is challenging; use lots when available. The Metro E Line stops at Downtown Santa Monica (15-min walk or bike to Venice). Venice is not walkable from other LA neighborhoods — Uber in.
